“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” // Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky was arguably the single greatest hockey player to have ever played the game. He transcended decades of players with his sublime play and singular focus on scoring. The above quote captures what set him apart, vision. Gretzky had an uncanny knack for being at the right place at the right time. Being where the puck had been did not allow him to be in position to score. Throughout his career he worked to refine this to a point where actions became subconscious and automatic.
Forward thinking is the ability to calculate the future and take action.
When you think about it, business is much the same. We need to move ourselves and companies into winning situations to achieve success. Complacency will not move your agenda down the field. As an entrepreneur it’s a never ending quest to reach this level of decision making. Those who achieve it are considered visionary. They eclipse their competition and redefine the world in which they operate. This foresight can elevate our game and give us a competitive advantage when one is not clear. When we step outside of the proverbial box, our ability to pick the right spots becomes more apparent. Each of these micro acts allows us to make critical decisions that are game changing.
- See the field
- Get in position to score
- Be visionary
- Continually refine the skill
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” // Wayne Gretzky
Being in position to score is a big part of the process, but you need to pull the trigger. If your endgame is to grow as a company and or individual play the game to win. While every shot is not going to result in a goal, you are not letting the game dictate an outcome to you. On those rare occasions you will take a shot that results in a game winner. These are the ones that we all seek. The biggest offense we could commit is not being in the game at all. Don’t let this be you.
